Land
Sounding Cov and Sounding the Great Hunger
At Performance Frequency, we have adapted the Singing Field approach, mentioned in our WORKSHOPS & CLASSSES section, to work with land.
We have two projects currently working with land. SOUNDING COV works with land in a city environment. SOUNDING THE GREAT HUNGER works with land in a rural setting.
For SOUNDING COV, please see the dedicated page
SOUNDING THE GREAT HUNGER
SOUNDING THE GREAT HUNGER is a project focused on working with famine and the expression of hunger. The project works particularly with one song, ‘The Gathering’ which was received by Sara McCarthy, from land with a strong history of Famine , in the West of Ireland. The song is about different generations of ancestors working together, with the lineage of famine, so that it may transcended.
As well as working with the individuals that participate in this project, Sounding the Great Hunger works directly on land. Groups of people will together chant this song, walking in areas of land which have been effected by famine. This will primarily be in the West of Ireland and possibly areas in Southern Ireland such as those around Cork. In this way, a song which came directly from the land, will be sung directly back to the land. The project is open to working in other areas of the World, and with other people, if called to do so.
The project operates in two parts. The Workshop Sounding the Great Hunger, explores what it is we are hungry for, using the power of sound and vocal expression. The other part is a Famine Walk, walking in areas of land effected by famine, singing ‘The Gathering’. The project will initially work with people in England and in Ireland. The Famine walks will take place in areas such as Cork, Mayo and Galway.
